Generator Safety

It is very important to know how to operate and use your generator safely. During storms, we worry about losing power. Face it, basically everything is operated by electricity. But incorrect usage of this could be deadly.  The following tips below will guide you on how to correctly operate your generator. (Tips provided by American Red Cross).

*Never use a generator, grill, camp stove, other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal burning devices inside a home, garage,  basement, crawl space or any partially enclosed area. 

* To avoid an electrician, keep the generator dry and do not use it in wet conditions. Operate it on a dry surface under an open canopy-like structure, such as under a tarp held up on poles. Do not touch a generator with wet wands.

*Opening doors and windows or using fans will not prevent carbon monoxide (CO) build up in the home. Although CO can't be seen or smelled, it can rapidly lead to gull incantation and death.  Even if you cannot smell exhaust fumes, you may still be exposed to CO2. If you start to feel sick or dizzy or weak, while using the generator, get fresh air immediately. 

* Install CO alarms in central locations on every level of your home or property and outside sleeping areas to provide early warnings.
