Tips for Keeping the Rain Outside Where It Belongs | SERVPRO of Eastern Niagara County

Rain, rain, go away, come again another day. We certainly appreciate when it does rain so we can get a break from the heat but also to help our grass, flowers and gardens grow.
What we don’t appreciate, however, is when the rain manages to make its way into our homes. Even just a little bit of water where it shouldn’t be can cause significant water damage. Catching it early or preventing it altogether is always ideal.
Our water damage restoration team wants you to stay dry during any sort of weather this summer, so use the tips below to keep the rain outside where it belongs.
Preparations Around Your Home
Each storm system that passes through has some sort of wind that can easily pick up yard debris or drop leaves into your gutters. Over the course of a single season, your gutters can get really full of yard waste!
If that rain has nowhere to go and can’t flow down your gutters and downspouts, it will eventually back up onto your roof and force its way under your shingles and into your attic.
Cleaning out your gutters often can help encourage any rain that does fall to flow down and away from your foundation. You should also make sure your sump pump is in working condition before a heavy rain comes to town. Sump pumps are a reliable way to pump excess ground water out of your basement, and you don’t want to discover that it is not working when the rain is pouring down and leaking all over your basement floors.
Securing Your Spaces
Checking on your roof is also a crucial part of your preparations. Since rain will fall directly on it, it is the first line of defense when it comes to keeping you safe and dry.
Any sort of gaps or cracks along your roof line or missing shingles can cause water to leak and drip into your attic and eventually down your walls.
Do a thorough inspection of your roof after every storm and tend to issues quickly to avoid more serious damages down the road. You should also do the same with your windows and doors. Check the seals and frames for signs of wearing or deterioration and add new caulk or fix these issues right away as well.
